Archival Overview
Undisputed modern giant of Algerian Chaabi music who modernized the Casbah musical genre with peerless vocal elegance, theatrical charisma, and unforgettable masterpieces like 'El Barah'.
Biographical Record
El Hachemi Guerouabi grew up in the popular Belcourt neighborhood of Algiers, passionately dividing his youth between football for CR Belcourt and music. Mentored by Hadj El Anka and playwright Mahieddine Bachtarzi at the Algerian National Theatre, he developed an aristocratic vocal style of unmatched purity.
Collaborating with genius lyricist Mahboub Bati in the early 1970s, Guerouabi transformed Chaabi into a national phenomenon, releasing epochal hits like 'El Barah', 'El Harraz', and 'Youm El Djemâa'. He combined respect for ancient Sufi qasidas with modern melodic orchestration, performing until his final concert in Algiers in 2005.
