Beloved Finnish poet and bohemian genius whose rhythmic, melancholic masterpiece Helkavirsiä (Whitsongs) fused ancient Kalevala trochaic meter with modern European symbolism.
Biographical Record
Armas Einar Leopold Lönnbohm, writing as Eino Leino, was born on July 6, 1878, in Paltamo, Kainuu. A lyrical prodigy who published his first poems at sixteen, he moved to Helsinki and became the charismatic poetic voice of the 'Young Finland' independence movement.
Leino's crowning achievement was the two-volume collection Helkavirsiä (Whitsongs, 1903 and 1916), in which he utilized the ancient eight-beat trochaic Kalevala meter to explore modern tragic themes of guilt, fate, solitude, and spiritual defiance. A prolific cultural translator, he completed the first Finnish translation of Dante's Divine Comedy. In Finland, his birthday on July 6 is celebrated annually as the Day of Eino Leino and Finnish Poetry.
