Biographical Record
Einar Henry Gerhardsen was born on May 10, 1897, in Asker. Starting work as a road construction laborer at age seventeen, he rose through the trade union movement and the Norwegian Labour Party. During World War II, he was imprisoned by the Nazis in Grini and Sachsenhausen concentration camps.
Appointed Prime Minister in 1945 at age forty-eight, Gerhardsen governed during 1945–1951 and 1955–1965. Under his calm, egalitarian leadership, Norway rebuilt from wartime devastation, created universal health care and national pension systems, joined NATO, and established an enduring social democratic consensus marked by shared prosperity, low unemployment, and universal education.
