Archival Overview

Educator, writer, and diplomat recognized as the father of Pan-Africanism, whose 1887 book Christianity, Islam and the Negro Race formulated the concept of the 'African Personality'.

Biographical Record

Barred from American theological colleges because of racial prejudice, Edward Wilmot Blyden (1832–1912) emigrated to Liberia in 1850, becoming professor of classics and president of Liberia College, as well as Liberian ambassador to Britain and France.

In his monumental 1887 study 'Christianity, Islam and the Negro Race', Blyden asserted that Africa had its own distinct moral destiny, cultural dignity, and communal ethos, introducing the concept of the 'African Personality' that later inspired Marcus Garvey, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Kwame Nkrumah.
