"The joy I felt at the prospect before me of being the instrument destined to take away from the world one of its greatest calamities was so excessive that I sometimes found myself in a kind of reverie."

Archival Overview

'Father of Immunology' who developed the world's first successful vaccine in 1796 using cowpox matter to confer immunity against lethal smallpox, saving hundreds of millions of lives.

Biographical Record

Edward Jenner (1749–1823) practiced country medicine in the English village of Berkeley, Gloucestershire. Listening to local dairymaids who claimed that catching mild cowpox from cows protected them from smallpox, Jenner tested the hypothesis in a historic scientific experiment.

On 14 May 1796, Jenner inoculated eight-year-old James Phipps with pus taken from cowpox lesions on milkmaid Sarah Nelmes' hand. Months later, Jenner exposed the boy to deadly smallpox; Phipps developed no disease whatsoever. Coining the term *vaccination* (from the Latin *vacca*, meaning cow), Jenner shared his discovery with the world for free, initiating the eradication of humanity's deadliest viral scourge.
