Norway's supreme nationalist composer, world-celebrated for Peer Gynt, the Piano Concerto in A minor, and Lyric Pieces.

Biographical Record

Edvard Hagerup Grieg was a Norwegian composer and pianist who brought the spirit of Norway's folk traditions, fjords, and folklore into the international musical consciousness. Educated at the Leipzig Conservatory, Grieg forged a distinctive Norwegian musical voice characterized by poignant modal harmonies and dancing rhythms.

His celebrated Piano Concerto in A minor (1868) is one of the most popular concertos in the world. Grieg's incidental music for Henrik Ibsen's play Peer Gynt (1875)—containing 'Morning Mood' and 'In the Hall of the Mountain King'—achieved global immortality. At his beloved home Troldhaugen near Bergen, Grieg spent his days composing his intimate Lyric Pieces for piano.
