Archival Overview

French industrial magnate who co-founded the Michelin tire empire in Clermont-Ferrand with his brother André, invented the removable pneumatic bicycle and automobile tire in 1891, and launched the Michelin Red Guide.

Biographical Record

Trained as an artist at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Édouard returned to Clermont-Ferrand in 1889 to save his grandfather's failing rubber factory alongside his brother André. In 1891, when a cyclist arrived with a punctured glued tire, Édouard invented the demountable pneumatic tire that could be repaired in fifteen minutes.

In 1895, the Michelin brothers fitted pneumatic tires to their car 'Éclair' in the Paris-Bordeaux-Paris motor race, sparking a global transport revolution. In 1898, they created the iconic 'Bibendum' Michelin Man, and in 1900 launched the legendary Michelin Red Guide to encourage automobile touring.
