Archival Overview
Belgian industrialist, financier, and transport builder who constructed the Paris Métro electrical subway network and founded the visionary desert oasis city of Heliopolis in Cairo.
Biographical Record
Beginning as a draftsman in a locomotive factory, Empain founded the Banque Empain in 1881 to finance urban electric tramway networks across Belgium, France, and Spain. In 1898, his consortium won the monumental concession to construct and operate the Paris Métropolitan subway system, inaugurating Line 1 for the 1900 Paris Exposition.
In 1906, Empain purchased thousands of acres of desert northeast of Cairo, constructing Heliopolis—a fully planned modern garden city with electric railways and architectural blending of Moorish, European, and Hindu styles, including his famous Hindu Palace. In World War I, King Albert I appointed him Lieutenant-General of army logistics.
