First Indigenous registered nurse in Canadian history, brave World War I veteran of the US Army Nurse Corps in France, centenarian pioneer.

Biographical Record

Charlotte Edith Anderson Monture was born on the Six Nations Grand River Reserve in Ontario. Denied admission to Canadian nursing colleges due to racial discrimination under the Indian Act, she moved to New York and graduated top of her class from the New Rochelle Hospital School of Nursing in 1914, becoming Canada's first Indigenous registered nurse.

In 1917, Monture volunteered for the United States Army Nurse Corps, serving at Buffalo Base Hospital 23 in Vittel, France, treating wounded doughboys gassed and shelled in the trenches. Returning to the Six Nations Reserve after the war, she spent decades providing community healthcare and midwifery, living to the extraordinary age of 105.
