"Bel canto is not about acrobatics; it is the expression of the human soul through the purity of sound."

Archival Overview

Slovak coloratura soprano hailed across the globe as the "Queen of Bel Canto" (Königin des Belcanto), whose dazzling high notes, effortless agility, and supreme vocal control dominated the world's opera stages for fifty years in Zerbinetta, Lucia di Lammermoor, and Queen of the Night.

Biographical Record

Edita Gruberová was born in Bratislava to a German-speaking father and Hungarian mother, studying at the Bratislava Conservatory. Making her operatic debut in 1968 as Rosina in The Barber of Seville, she fled communist Czechoslovakia in 1971 to audition for the Vienna State Opera, defecting to the West and making Vienna her artistic home.

Gruberová's international breakthrough occurred in 1976 when Karl Böhm cast her as Zerbinetta in Richard Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos at the Vienna State Opera. Her flawless coloratura, crystal-clear high Fs, and dazzling trills astonished audiences. Over a fifty-year career, she reigned supreme in the virtuoso bel canto roles of Donizetti (Lucia di Lammermoor, Maria Stuarda, Roberto Devereux) and Bellini (Norma, I Puritani) at the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, and Covent Garden, retiring in 2019 after over 700 performances in Vienna alone.
