Archival Overview

Belgian comic strip master and operatic baritone who collaborated with Hergé on Tintin and created the landmark science-fiction series Blake and Mortimer, author of The Yellow 'M'.

Biographical Record

Trained as an opera singer at the Brussels Conservatory, Jacobs performed across Belgium and France before turning to illustration during World War II. Hired by Hergé to assist with backgrounds and colorization on Tintin albums (The Seven Crystal Balls), he founded his own path.

In 1946, in the debut issue of Tintin magazine, Jacobs launched Captain Francis Blake and Professor Philip Mortimer. His 1953 masterpiece Le Mystère de la Grande Pyramide and 1956's La Marque Jaune (The Yellow 'M') established the gold standard of literate, atmospheric, and scientifically grounded graphic novels.
