Biographical Record
Joe Michael "Dusty" Hill was born in Dallas, Texas, and learned to play guitar and bass in high school bands with his brother Rocky Hill and drummer Frank Beard. In 1969, Beard and Hill joined guitarist-singer Billy Gibbons in Houston to complete ZZ Top, forming one of the most durable and visually distinctive lineups in rock history.
With his thumping basslines, sunglasses, signature chest-length beard, and spinning sheepskin guitar, Hill powered multi-platinum albums like Tres Hombres (1973), Eliminator (1983), and Afterburner (1985). He provided gritty lead vocals on classic anthems like "Tush" and "Party on the Patio", selling over 50 million records worldwide before his passing at age seventy-two.
