John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough (1650–1722), was Britain's greatest commander of the Early Modern era. In 1704, he executed an audacious covert 250-mile strategic march from the Low Countries to the Danube River, deceiving French marshals and uniting with Prince Eugene of Savoy.

At the Battle of Blenheim (1704), he smashed the Franco-Bavarian army, saving Vienna from capture. Consecutive masterclasses at Ramillies (1706), Oudenarde (1708), and Malplaquet (1709) established Britain as a preeminent global power.
