Archival Overview
Pioneering Moroccan short story writer, art critic, and journalist who, alongside Mohamed Zefzaf and Mohamed Choukri, formed the holy trinity of raw Moroccan realism.
Biographical Record
Driss El Khouri was born in the working-class Derb Sultan quarter of Casablanca. Self-taught, he began his career as a typographer before turning to journalism and literature, writing for 'Al-Mouharrir' and 'Al-Ittihad Al-Ichtiraki' for over four decades.
El Khouri published landmark short story collections including 'Huzn fi al-Ra's wa al-Qalb' (Sorrow in the Head and Heart, 1973) and 'Bidayat' (Beginnings). His sharp irony, deep empathy for subaltern classes, and vivid capture of urban street dialect made him a beloved cultural patriarch.
