Biographical Record
Abdullah Abdurahman was born on December 12, 1872, in Wellington, Western Cape, the grandson of slaves who had purchased their own freedom. In 1893, he graduated in medicine from the University of Glasgow, becoming the first Black South African physician trained in Western medicine.
Elected president of the African Political Organisation (APO) in 1905, Dr. Abdurahman led the struggle against racial disenfranchisement, leading delegations to London in 1906 and 1909 to protest the South Africa Act's racial colour bar. In 1904, he was elected to the Cape Town City Council and in 1914 to the Cape Provincial Council, serving for decades to expand public sanitation, clinics, and schooling for disadvantaged communities.
