Archival Overview
Legendary American bass guitarist and cornerstone of Stax Records whose groovy, syncopated basslines with Booker T. & the M.G.'s anchored timeless soul masterpieces by Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, and the Blues Brothers.
Biographical Record
Donald Carl Dunn grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, picking up the bass guitar alongside his lifelong friend, guitarist Steve Cropper. Joining Booker T. & the M.G.'s in 1964 as the Stax house band bassist, Dunn became the rhythm engine behind the gritty Southern soul sound.
Dunn's basslines powered monumental classics including Otis Redding's 'Respect' and '(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay', Sam & Dave's 'Soul Man', and Eddie Floyd's 'Knock on Wood'. In 1980, he introduced his pipe-smoking cool to a new generation in the comedy film 'The Blues Brothers'. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, he received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.
