Archival Overview
Versatile artist, diplomat, and archaeologist appointed by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802 as the very first Director-General of the Musée du Louvre, transforming it into the world's preeminent art museum.
Biographical Record
A charming diplomat under Louis XV and Louis XVI, Denon survived the Revolution thanks to painter Jacques-Louis David. In 1798, he accompanied General Bonaparte on the Expedition to Egypt, sketching pharaonic temples, tombs, and pyramids under sniper fire, publishing his acclaimed Voyage dans la Basse et la Haute Égypte (1802).
As Director of the Musée Napoléon (Louvre), Denon collected masterworks across conquered Europe, organizing paintings chronologically by national school and inventing modern museum curating. The Denon Wing of the Louvre honors his legacy.
