Giuseppe Domenico Scarlatti was an Italian composer of the Baroque era who spent much of his career in the service of the Portuguese and Spanish royal families. Born in the same miraculous year as J.S. Bach and George Frideric Handel, Scarlatti served Queen Maria Barbara of Spain in Madrid for nearly three decades.

Scarlatti is celebrated today for his monumental legacy of 555 single-movement keyboard sonatas. Written mostly for the harpsichord, these dazzling pieces feature hand-crossings, rapid arpeggios, wide leaps, and dissonant cluster chords influenced by Spanish flamenco guitars and folk castanets, anticipating classical sonata form.
