Archival Overview
Legendary indigenous leader known as 'Mama Dulu' who co-founded the Federación Ecuatoriana de Indios (FEI) in 1944 and founded Ecuador's first clandestine bilingual Quichua-Spanish schools for rural children.
Biographical Record
Dolores Cacuango Quilo was born on October 26, 1881, on the San Pablo Urco hacienda. Illiterate in Spanish until adulthood, Cacuango learned the language while working as an urban domestic laborer in Quito, returning to Cayambe as a fearless community organizer.
In 1944, Cacuango co-founded the Federación Ecuatoriana de Indios (FEI). In 1945, defying government bans, she established the first bilingual schools in Yanahuaico, teaching indigenous children in their native Quichua. Her famous prophecy—'We are like the mountain grass: if they tear us out, we sprout again'—remains the motto of the indigenous movement.
