Biographical Record
Earl Simmons was raised in Yonkers, New York, surviving a childhood marked by severe neglect, abuse, and stints in juvenile facilities. Finding solace in hip-hop, beatboxing, and stray dogs, he adopted the stage name DMX (Dark Man X). After signing with Def Jam Recordings, he burst onto the rap scene in 1998 with his explosive debut album It's Dark and Hell Is Hot, followed seven months later by Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood.
With his guttural barks, spiritual prayers, and raw emotional vulnerability, DMX stripped hip-hop of its late-1990s shiny-suit excess, delivering visceral street anthems like "Ruff Ryders' Anthem", "Party Up (Up in Here)", and "X Gon' Give It to Ya". He crossed over into Hollywood action cinema with starring roles in Romeo Must Die, Exit Wounds, and Cradle 2 the Grave, selling over 74 million records worldwide.
