Biographical Record
Dmitry Ivanovich Donskoy (1350–1389) was Grand Prince of Moscow from 1359 and Grand Prince of Vladimir from 1363. Reigning during the zenith of the Golden Horde's 'Great Troubles', Dmitry built the first white-stone Kremlin walls of Moscow in 1367, successfully withstanding sieges by Grand Duke Algirdas of Lithuania.
In 1380, Dmitry forged a united coalition of Russian principalities to challenge the Mongol warlord Mamai. Blessed by Saint Sergius of Radonezh, Dmitry marched to the upper reaches of the Don River. At the Battle of Kulikovo Pole (Snipes' Field) on September 8, 1380, Dmitry traded armor with a boyar to fight as a common knight in the frontline ranks. A concealed ambush cavalry regiment routed the Golden Horde, shattering the myth of Mongol invincibility and establishing Moscow as the heart of Russian national liberation.
