"The sap of leaves infected with mosaic disease retains its infectious properties even after filtration through Chamberland filter candles; nature possesses pathogens beyond the reach of the optical lens."

Archival Overview

Russian botanist who discovered viruses in 1892 by proving that the infectious agent of tobacco mosaic disease passed through unglazed porcelain Chamberland filters that trapped all known bacteria, launching the science of virology.

Biographical Record

Dmitri Iosifovich Ivanovsky (1864–1920) studied plant physiology at Saint Petersburg University under Andrei Famintsyn. Dispatched to the Crimea in 1887 and 1890 to investigate a mysterious blight destroying tobacco plantations, Ivanovsky crushed infected leaves and passed the sap through bacterial Chamberland candle filters.

To his astonishment, the filtered, cell-free liquid retained full infectious potency, proving that the disease was caused by a sub-microscopic agent thousands of times smaller than bacteria. Reported to the Saint Petersburg Academy of Sciences on February 12, 1892, his experiment is universally celebrated as the birth of virology.
