Former mine-worker and trade union leader who rose to command Wilaya IV, coordinating the massive street demonstrations of December 1960 that broke the back of colonial diplomacy.
Biographical Record
Born in the Ouarsenis mining region, Djilali Bounaama worked in the zinc and lead mines of Bou Caïd, leading strikes with the CGT union before joining the armed struggle in 1954. Taking command of Wilaya IV after Si M'Hamed's death in 1959, he displayed extraordinary strategic poise.
He orchestrated the historic nationwide popular demonstrations of December 11, 1960, bringing the urban masses into the streets to prove to the United Nations that the FLN was the sole legitimate voice of Algeria. He fell in combat on August 8, 1961, when colonial forces blew up his secret command post in Blida.
