Biographical Record
Djibril Tamsir Niane was born on January 9, 1932, in Conakry. Educated at the University of Bordeaux, where he earned a master's degree in history, he dedicated his scholarly life to demonstrating that oral traditions constituted legitimate, scientifically rigorous sources of historical truth.
Working closely with master griot Mamadou Kouyate, Niane transcribed, translated, and published Soundiata ou l'epopee mandingue (1960), which introduced the glorious founding of the 13th-century Mali Empire to millions of readers worldwide. Persecuted and imprisoned by Sekou Toure's regime for political dissent, he lived in exile in Senegal, teaching at Cheikh Anta Diop University and serving as editor of Volume IV of the monumental UNESCO General History of Africa.
