Archival Overview
Charismatic Nigerien socialist trade unionist and leader of the Sawaba movement who campaigned for immediate independence in the 1958 French constitutional referendum.
Biographical Record
Djibo Bakary was born in 1922 in Soudoure, near Niamey. Educated at the École Normale William Ponty, he led the postal workers trade union and was elected the first municipal Mayor of Niamey in 1956.
Bakary founded the radical political movement Sawaba ('Freedom' in Hausa), championing democratic socialism, workers' rights, and pan-African unity. In the historic 1958 referendum, Bakary campaigned courageously for a 'No' vote demanding immediate total independence from France. Defeated by colonial administrative pressure, Sawaba was banned, and Bakary led underground resistance in exile for decades before returning to Niger as a respected elder of progressive politics.
