Archival Overview
Historic freedom fighter of the Battle of Algiers who placed the landmark bomb at the Coq Hardi brasserie and survived the French death penalty.
Biographical Record
A postal worker in Algiers who became radicalized by colonial apartheid, Djamila Bouazza was recruited into the network of Yacef Saadi and Larbi Ben M'hidi. Under the code name 'Mimi', her European-style attire allowed her to bypass colonial checkpoints across the European quarter.
On January 26, 1957, she executed the bombing of the Coq Hardi brasserie. Arrested and subjected to horrific electric torture at El Biar, she became the first Algerian woman sentenced to death by a French military tribunal, sparking an international campaign by Jacques Vergès that saved her from the guillotine.
