Biographical Record
Djamel Amrani was born in Sour El Ghozlane. On May 19, 1956, while a student in Algiers, he answered the historic FLN call for an unlimited student strike. Arrested by French paratroopers in 1957, he was tortured, and his father and brother were murdered in colonial reprisal camps.
Fleeing to Paris, he published 'Le Témoin' (The Witness) with Éditions de Minuit in 1960, an account that galvanized French and international intellectuals against the war. Amrani authored over twenty volumes of poetry, including 'Soleil de notre nuit' and 'L'Arbre du sommeil', earning the Pablo Neruda International Poetry Prize.
