Djalma Santos (1929–2013) starred for Portuguesa and Palmeiras, earning 498 appearances for the Verdao and winning three Brazilian national championships. Renowned for impeccable defensive timing, stamina, and revolutionary attacking throw-ins, he was never sent off once in over 1,000 career matches.

In the 1958 World Cup final in Stockholm, Santos was inserted into the starting lineup for his first match of the tournament to neutralize Sweden's star winger Lennart Skoglund, performing so flawlessly that he was voted the best right-back of the tournament after playing a single match. He started every game in Brazil's 1962 title defense.
