Archival Overview
Eminent 3rd-century Pope of Alexandria known as 'Dionysius the Great', student of Origen who headed the Catechetical School of Alexandria and showed heroic compassion tending plague victims during the Cyprian Plague.
Biographical Record
Born into a wealthy pagan polytheistic family in Alexandria, Dionysius converted to Christianity after intensive philosophical investigation, studying under Origen and succeeding Heraclas as dean of the Catechetical School of Alexandria in 231 CE. In 248 CE, he was consecrated Patriarch of Alexandria.
Surviving the Decian and Valerian persecutions in desert exile, he returned to Alexandria during the catastrophic Plague of Cyprian (c. 250–265 CE). While pagan officials fled, Dionysius organized his clergy and lay Christians into emergency medical corps, nursing the dying regardless of religion, celebrated across global Church history for pastoral courage.
