Archival Overview

Supreme archetype of Cynic philosophy who discarded all material possessions to live in a ceramic tub, challenging social hypocrisy with lamp in hand and defying Alexander the Great.

Biographical Record

Diogenes of Sinope (c. 412–323 BCE) turned philosophy into a radical performative art of self-sufficiency (*autarkeia*). Exiled from Sinope, he took up residence in a wine storage jar (*pithos*) in the Athenian Agora, reducing his physical needs to the absolute bare minimum and mocking societal pretensions.

Carrying a lantern through Athens in broad daylight, he announced he was 'looking for a human being'. When Alexander the Great visited him in Corinth and offered to grant any royal wish, Diogenes calmly replied: 'Stand a little out of my sun.' He was the first thinker in recorded history to declare himself a 'citizen of the universe' (*cosmopolites*).
