Archival Overview

Heroic German Lutheran pastor and theologian who resisted the Nazi regime, led the underground seminary of the Confessing Church, authored The Cost of Discipleship, and was executed by hanging weeks before WWII ended.

Biographical Record

Earning his doctorate in theology at age twenty-one in Berlin and studying at Union Theological Seminary in New York, Bonhoeffer returned to Germany to become a founding voice of the Confessing Church opposing Hitler's Aryanized "German Christian" movement. He organized the illegal preachers' seminary at Finkenwalde.

In his masterpiece The Cost of Discipleship, he condemned "cheap grace" and urged sacrificial obedience. Joining the active conspiracy to overthrow Hitler, he was arrested in 1943; his moving Letters and Papers from Prison inspired generations of liberation theology.
