Diego Maradona

Diego Armando Maradona was born in Villa Fiorito, a destitute shantytown on the southern outskirts of Buenos Aires. Discovered while playing for the youth team Los Cebollitas, Maradona made his first-division debut for Argentinos Juniors ten days before his sixteenth birthday. Moving to Boca Juniors in 1981, he won the Argentine championship before embarking on a turbulent European career with FC Barcelona, marked by record transfer fees and breathtaking moments of virtuosity.

In 1984, Maradona signed with SSC Napoli, a working-class southern Italian club that had never won a national title. In an era dominated by wealthy northern powerhouses, Maradona catalyzed a sociological revolution, inspiring Napoli to two historic Serie A titles (1987, 1990) and the 1989 UEFA Cup, becoming a secular deity in Naples.

Maradona's apex occurred at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. In the quarter-final against England, he authored the two most famous goals in football history within four minutes: the controversial 'Hand of God' followed by the 'Goal of the Century,' a mesmerizing 60-yard solo dash past five English defenders and the goalkeeper. Leading Argentina to victory over West Germany in the final, Maradona cemented his place in sports immortality before his untimely death in November 2020.
