French racing driver who won the 1978 24 Hours of Le Mans for Renault, three Formula One Grands Prix for Tyrrell, Ligier, and Ferrari, and was on the brink of the 1982 World Championship before a career-ending crash.

Biographical Record

Didier Pironi (1952–1987) won the 1977 Monaco Formula Three race before co-driving the Renault Alpine A442B to an emotional French victory at the 1978 24 Hours of Le Mans. Signed by Enzo Ferrari in 1981 alongside Gilles Villeneuve, Pironi proved blisteringly quick in the turbo era.

In 1982, Pironi led the World Championship after winning at Imola and Zandvoort, but suffered catastrophic leg injuries in practice at Hockenheim in torrential fog. Turning to offshore powerboat racing, he claimed world championship honors before perishing in a 100 mph crash near the Isle of Wight.
