Biographical Record

Dhyan Chand joined the British Indian Army at age sixteen where his magical ball control and goal-scoring abilities quickly earned him national acclaim. Playing center-forward, he displayed such supernatural stickwork that opposing teams and officials once broke open his hockey stick to check for hidden glue or magnets.

Chand led India to three successive Olympic gold medals in Amsterdam (1928), Los Angeles (1932), and Berlin (1936), scoring over 400 international goals. Adolf Hitler was so mesmerized by his Berlin performance that he offered Chand German citizenship and the rank of Colonel, which Chand politely declined.
