Archival Overview
Heroic naval commander and Dey of Algiers (1683–1688) who repulsed French naval bombardments and was later appointed Grand Admiral of the entire Ottoman Imperial Navy.
Biographical Record
Hüseyin Mezzomorto (the nickname meaning 'Half-Dead' from having survived terrible battle wounds) was an audacious corsair captain and naval genius of Algiers. When the French fleet under Admiral Duquesne bombarded Algiers in 1683, Mezzomorto seized command, turned the massive Casbah shore batteries onto the French ships, and forced the armada to withdraw.
Elected Dey of Algiers, he governed with exceptional energy from 1683 to 1688, strengthening the coastal forts and modernizing artillery. His tactical fame was so immense that the Ottoman Sultan appointed him Kapudan Pasha (Grand Admiral) of the Ottoman Navy, where he modernized ship design from oared galleys to modern sailing galleons.
