Archival Overview
Dey of Algiers (1817–1818) who broke the mutinous power of the Janissary militia by boldly relocating the treasury and seat of government to the hilltop Casbah Citadel.
Biographical Record
Ali Khoja was a cultivated, resolute statesman who had served as the Grand Scribe (Khoja) of the Regency of Algiers. In September 1817, amidst violent civil unrest and Janissary rebellions in the lower city that had toppled successive rulers, he was elected Dey by loyal officers.
In a masterstroke of political courage, Ali Khoja moved overnight under the cover of darkness with his loyal Kourghli and Kabyle guards to the impregnable upper Citadel (Dar Es-Soltane) of the Casbah, taking the entire state treasury with him. From the fortress heights, he successfully suppressed the mutineers and restored state sovereignty until succumbing to the plague epidemic of 1818.
