Dennis Gabor (1900–1979) earned his engineering doctorate in Berlin before fleeing Nazi Germany in 1933 to settle in Britain. While working at British Thomson-Houston on electron microscope resolution in 1947, he conceived the principle of wavefront reconstruction.

By splitting a light beam into reference and object waves, Gabor recorded both amplitude and phase information on a flat plate, creating the first hologram. The invention of the laser in 1960 unleashed the full potential of his discovery in optical computing, art, and secure data storage.
