Biographical Record

Denmark Vesey was born into captivity in the Caribbean and brought to Charleston, South Carolina, where he won a lottery in 1799 that allowed him to purchase his personal freedom. As a prosperous carpenter, he co-founded an African Methodist Episcopal Church and mobilized hundreds of enslaved and free Black artisans.

In 1822, Vesey plotted an ambitious liberation plan to seize Charleston's arsenals and liberate enslaved people. Betrayed before the plot could launch, he was tried and executed alongside thirty-four comrades, cementing his legacy as a courageous strategist of Black liberation.
