Democritus of Abdera

Democritus of Abdera (c. 460–370 BCE) was an intellectual titan of classical antiquity who synthesized cosmology, ethics, biology, and geometry into a unified mechanistic philosophy. Following his teacher Leucippus, he argued that behind the apparent diversity of colors, smells, and tastes lie only microscopic, indivisible atoms moving through the empty void.

Known as 'The Laughing Philosopher' for his serene cheerfulness and contempt for human folly, Democritus taught that the highest human good is euthymia (cheerfulness and tranquility of soul), achieved through moderation, wisdom, and freedom from superstition.
