Dedan Kimathi

Dedan Kimathi Waciuri (1920 – 1957) was the supreme military commander of the Kenya Land and Freedom Army (KLFA), popularly known as the Mau Mau rebellion. Working as a clerk and schoolteacher, Kimathi joined the Kenya African Union (KAU) in the late 1940s, administering secret oaths of unity to resist British settler land expropriation.

When the British colonial government declared a state of emergency in 1952, Kimathi retreated into the dense rain forests of the Aberdare mountain range, organizing thousands of Kikuyu, Meru, and Embu fighters into disciplined guerrilla regiments. For four years, holding the title of Field Marshal, he directed asymmetric attacks and psychological resistance against British imperial forces. Captured in October 1956 after being wounded by colonial tribal police, Kimathi was convicted in a swift trial and hanged at Kamiti Prison in Nairobi on February 18, 1957, buried in an unmarked grave. He is celebrated as Kenya's preeminent independence freedom fighter.
