Biographical Record
David Mestre was born on June 25, 1948, in Santarém and moved to Luanda as an infant, embracing Angola as his sole and sovereign homeland. Joining the cultural resistance against Portuguese colonial censorship, he co-founded the vanguard poetic movement Brigada Jovem de Literatura de Luanda in the 1970s.
Mestre worked as cultural editor of the daily newspaper Jornal de Angola, fearlessly defending artistic autonomy against bureaucratic conformity. His poetic collections—notably Do Canto à Idade (1977), Crónica do Guerreiro (1983), and Subscrito a Giz (1988)—combine sharp linguistic irony with profound love for the street life and language of Luanda.
