Archival Overview
Kabaka of Buganda (1897–1939) who ascended the throne at one year old and skillfully steered his kingdom through the 1900 Buganda Agreement, preserving indigenous governance.
Biographical Record
Daudi Chwa was proclaimed Kabaka (King) of Buganda in August 1897 at just twelve months of age, following the deposition and exile of his father, Kabaka Mwanga II. Reigned through a three-man regency headed by Sir Apolo Kagwa, he received an elite modern education at King's College Budo.
Assuming full executive authority in 1914, Daudi Chwa navigated the constraints of British colonial 'indirect rule' under the 1900 Uganda Agreement with formidable dignity. He defended Baganda customary land tenure (Mailo land), supported the creation of modern educational and medical infrastructure, and authored treatises defending indigenous institutions against imperial encroachment, reigning with widespread devotion until his death in 1939.
