Biographical Record
Daoud Corm was born in Ghosta in Mount Lebanon and exhibited extraordinary natural artistic skill, drawing portraits of local clergy in childhood. In 1870, he traveled to Rome to study at the Accademia di San Luca under Roberto Bompiani, becoming the first Lebanese artist to receive formal academic training in Europe.
Corm returned to the Middle East, painting religious murals and altarpieces for hundreds of Maronite churches across Lebanon. Moving to Cairo, he became the premier portraitist of the regional aristocracy, painting official portraits of Khedive Abbas II and Egyptian ministers. He mentored the next generation of painters, earning recognition as the grandfather of modern Lebanese fine arts.
