"What a cannonading drive from the point, and an acrobatic save by the goaltender!"

Archival Overview

Incomparable Cape Breton-born play-by-play broadcaster who called 16 Stanley Cup victories for the Montreal Canadiens on Hockey Night in Canada.

Biographical Record

Daniel Joseph "Danny" Gallivan was the poetic voice of the Montreal Canadiens during their golden dynasties. Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Gallivan taught school and served in the merchant marine before calling his first NHL game at the Montreal Forum in 1952.

For thirty-two seasons on Hockey Night in Canada, Gallivan described hockey with baroque, Shakespearean vocabulary, introducing phrases like "cannonading drive," "savavelly spinorama," "anarchical scramble," and "scintillating save." He called over 1,900 games and sixteen Stanley Cup championships, inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1984.
