Archival Overview
Jewish-Algerian medical student who established clandestine laboratories for the FLN during the Battle of Algiers, endured five years in Barberousse, and became a noted memoirist.
Biographical Record
Daniel Timsit was born in Algiers into an ancient indigenous Jewish-Algerian family. Studying medicine, he was appalled by colonial inequality and joined the armed struggle with the FLN, working directly with Taleb Abderrahmane to establish clandestine explosive and medical workshops in the Casbah.
Captured in 1956, he was sentenced to twenty years of forced labor, surviving brutal imprisonment in Barberousse alongside Algerian freedom fighters of all backgrounds. His prison diaries, published as 'Récits de la longue patience' and 'Algérie, récit interdit', offer an immortal testimony of Jewish-Muslim patriotic brotherhood in the Algerian Revolution.
