Archival Overview
Legendary Nigerien traditional musician and master of the molo two-string lute whose philosophical poetry and historical epics preserved the oral memory of the Sahel.
Biographical Record
Mamane Dan Gourmou was born in 1935 in the Maradi region of southern Niger. Learning the ancient art of the molo (traditional two-stringed plucked lute) from ancestral griots, he became the most celebrated troubadour of post-independence Niger.
With his deep, gravelly voice and hypnotic plucking rhythms, Dan Gourmou chronicled the heroic struggles of Hausa rulers, peasant virtues, agricultural harvests, and the harsh challenges of desertification. He performed across West Africa and Europe, serving as a living repository of Sahelian historical memory and ethical guidance for generations of listeners.
