Archival Overview
Beloved poet of the Bergslagen wilderness whose haunting charcoal burner ballads and collections 'Kolvaktarens visor' and 'Svarta ballader' form an eternal part of Swedish folk culture.
Biographical Record
Daniel Andersson was born on April 6, 1888, in the remote forest village of Skattlösberg, Dalarna, to a village schoolmaster. Working as a charcoal burner, forestry laborer, and school assistant, he experienced the isolation, mysticism, and hardship of the Finnish-settled wilderness (Finnmarken).
Educated at Brunnsvik Folk High School, Andersson emerged as the authentic poetic voice of the forest working class. His collections, Kolarhistorier (1914), Kolvaktarens visor (1915), and Svarta ballader (1917)—including immortal ballads like Jag väntar vid min mila and Jungman Jansson—blended wilderness loneliness with spiritual longing. On September 16, 1920, while staying at Hotel Hellman in Stockholm, he was accidentally poisoned when the hotel staff used cyanide gas to fumigate bedbugs without ventilating the room, dying at age thirty-two.
