Biographical Record
Born Abderrahmane Amrani to an Aurès Chaoui family from Khenchela, he grew up in the working-class railway suburb of El Harrach in Algiers, adopting the artist name Dahmane El Harrachi. In 1949, he emigrated to France, performing in the immigrant cafes of Paris, Lyon, and Marseille with his banjo and mandole.
Unlike the long, ornate classical epics of traditional Chaabi, Dahmane composed punchy, contemporary moral parables dealing with the loneliness, alienation, and nostalgia of North African migrant workers. His immortal 1973 song Ya Rayah (O Traveler, where are you going? You will eventually return...) became the universal anthem of human migration, covered worldwide by Rachid Taha.
