Archival Overview

Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo who formed a government of national reconciliation during the Congo Crisis and successfully reintegrated secessionist Katanga.

Biographical Record

Cyrille Adoula (1921–1978) began his public career as a bank clerk and prominent leader of the General Federation of Congolese Labor (FGTK). In August 1961, following Lumumba's assassination and the secession of Katanga and South Kasai, Parliament convened at Lovanium University and elected Adoula Prime Minister of national unity.

Working closely with UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold and U Thant, Adoula launched UN Operation Grand Slam in 1963, crushing Moise Tshombe's mercenary-backed Katangan secession. He later served as Congolese ambassador to the United States and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
