Archival Overview
Pioneering Flemish naturalist author whose uncompromising novel Het recht van den sterkste and classic social drama Het gezin van Paemel exposed the harsh poverty and class exploitation of rural Flanders.
Biographical Record
From a wealthy industrial family in Nevele, Buysse rejected family chicory manufacturing to write social realism inspired by Émile Zola and Guy de Maupassant. In 1893, his debut novel Het recht van den sterkste shocked polite society with its unvarnished portrayal of village violence and brutalized peasant lives.
In 1903, he wrote the classic stage drama Het gezin van Paemel (The Van Paemel Family), a towering tragedy of agrarian evictions and emigration. Co-founding the avant-garde journal Van Nu en Straks, he was created a baron shortly before his death.
